Anti-LGBT discrimination has hurt same sex couples physically and emotionally, but now there is evidence that it hits where it hurts the most – in the wallet.
The New York Times has done a breakdown of how much more expensive it is to be a same sex couple than a straight couple. They took into account a number of factors including health insurace, social security, estate taxes, cost of child bearing, financial planning and income taxes. They also reported the worst case real-life scenario they could find, within each category.
The grand totals? Best case scenario, same sex couples lifetime costs are $28,595 higher than straight couples. Worst case scenario, same sex couples could expect to pay up to $211,993 over their lifetimes.
