Florida LEGAL (Law Enforcement Gays And Lesbians) marked its 10-year anniversary with a celebration in Orlando on Oct. 9 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. The group represents and addresses the needs, issues and concerns of LGBT criminal justice professionals in Florida.
LEGAL vice president Carroll Hunter estimated about 100 attendees, some traveling from as far as California. She said they are still tabulating the total funds raised through a silent auction.
“It was a lavish evening, everyone was dressed to the nines, the food was sumptuous, and everyone at that banquet was proud law enforcement professionals,” Hunter said.
Orlando Police Department Chief of Police Val Demmings delivered one of the keynote speeches and Equality Florida executive director Nadine Smith was awarded the community service award.
LEGAL hosts conferences for LGBT criminal justice professionals and their next one will be in 2012 at the Walt Disney World Hilton.
