Judge okays cameras in courtroom

The hearing on the federal Prop. 8 challenge will be televised. Attorneys argued over whether to allow cameras in courtroom on Jan. 6, and presiding Judge Walker made his decision that same day. He also turned down an offer by Court TV to shoot the proceedings, opting instead to have the court tech department film. It won’t be broadcast live, but posted online with a one-day delay.

The court challenge to Prop. 8 will begin Jan. 11. It was launched by the American Foundation for Equal Rights, is titled “Perry vs. Schwarzenegger” and argues on behalf of two same sex couples who wish to be married but cannot. Prop 8 was a California ballot proposition and constitutional amendment passed in Nov. 2008 that overturned the California Supreme Court’s decision allowing same sex couples to marry.

The attorneys challenging the ban on gay marriage were in favor of televising next week’s trial, while Prop. 8 supporters were not.
