XXXPlicit

I’ll be honest, I had no idea what I was getting into when I walked into the Yellow Venue to see XXXPlicit. And now that I’ve seen it, I’m still not exactly sure what I saw. I do know that I feel torn between not being able to describe the experience and telling you too much; I also have a feeling my nebulous state of mind would please the show’s duo. Let me be clear about one thing though: I love this show.

Lady Wow Wow opens the show with a serio-comic, at times shocking, monologue about her — her character’s? — sexual exploits. Ms. Wow combines singing, acting, and performance art to absorbing effect. Later in the show, her interpretation of diaper-wearing kidnapper-wannabe Lisa Nowack is hilarious, and unexpectedly poignant. “He said he loved me,” she cries; we realize we’ve been there and can maybe forgive Nowack for bringing her crazy to our state.

The other half of the pair, Waxie Moon, is a tall, thin man with a commanding presence who is self-described — not to mention best described — as a “gender-bending-queer-lady-boylesque-stripping-sensation.” After his first appearance — which I decline to describe for spoiler reasons — the audience is filled with anticipation, knowing that just about anything can happen with these two.

Clad in a mask and blue jeans, a glammed-up mourning coat and a top hat, or a Mickey Mouse cap and a cheerleading outfit, Moon’s performances are sexy, yet leave you questioning why you think it’s sexy at the same time. He puts his own spin on a popular song in his final number that is inspired and complements Wow’s Nowack piece nicely.

As a bonus, Rob Gee, whose Fruitcake is also in Fringe, makes a voiceover cameo as a lion who calls a gazelle phone sex line. Sounds funny already, doesn’t it? Get this — the lion wants to take the submissive role.

Wow and Moon approach their work in different ways, but they have a common bond, also a rare commodity in current theatre: fearlessness. I want to put on a ski mask, a thong, and some thigh-high red boots and break into Seattle to steal Waxie Moon and Lady Wow Wow for Orlando.
