The majority of Americans are in favor of same-sex marriage, according to a new CNN poll.
51 percent responded that gay marriage should be legal, representing the first time a CNN poll has found majority support on the issue.
However, there are still generation and gender gaps. Among Americans younger than fifty, 60 percent support gay marriage while the older generation is holding out with only 40 percent supporting. The majority of men still do not think same-sex marriage should be legal, while 57 percent of women approve.
In addition, there is a partisan divide. 70 percent of Republicans are against gay marriage while more than 60 percent of Democrats are in favor – so are more than half of the registered independents.
CNN polled 824 American adults on the issue via telephone.
