Orange County is one step closer to a countywide domestic partner registry.
On Feb. 21, after more than two hours of discussion, the commissioners held a “vote of confidence” stating that they’ll move forward with the registry. A draft proposal will be reviewed in the future.
During the Feb. 21 dicussion, Mayor Teresa Jacobs clarified that she never struck down a domestic partner registry for Orange County, which contradicts past reports from local LGBT activists. However, Jacobs had not committed to supporting a domestic partner registry similar to the one currently in use by the City of Orlando. Orlando's domestic partner registry kicked off Jan. 12 and covers protections such as hospital visitation, rights to health care decisions, correctional facility visitation, rights to funeral/burial decisions, guardianship and the right for both domestic partners to participate in the education of their children.
