Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn and St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster were just two of the many notables on hand during the first-ever “Equality Means Business” luncheon held at Tech Data headquarters on Thursday, Nov. 29.
The luncheon hosted more than 100 attendees, who were on hand to learn about how equality measures – like non-discrimination policies – help improve the business communities of inclusive regions and the community as a whole.
“Economic growth is linked to diversity,” explained Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida. “We wish to improve Florida’s national and international reputation as a welcoming and inclusive place to live, work and visit.”
Equality Means Business was formed to spotlight major employers in Florida that have adopted comprehensive non-discrimination polices and have demonstrated their commitment to valuing and pro-actively including all employees. Membership in the Advisory Board is made up of companies and individuals who are highly respected for their commitment to creating a safe and productive work place for all individuals including providing protection regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity.
The list of employers participating was long, but included Morgan Stanley, Chase, Fifth Third Bank, Universal Health Care Group, the Tampa Bay Business Journal and Progressive Insurance.
Several other cities besides St. Petersburg and Tampa were represented at the luncheon, with officials from Bellair, Largo, Gulfport and Oldsmar also present.
