The Boxer: A Silent Movie Onstage brings theater, vaudeville and silent cinema full circle in this gender-bending, “bromantic” comedy of errors. The show’s central character is a woman who disguises herself as a man in order to get a job during hard times circa the turn of the 20th century. The heroine soon finds herself thrust into the role of training a boxer for the biggest fight of his life. As the two struggle to train for the fight, a bromance ensues and the heroine quickly falls in love with the boxer, further complicating things.
The Boxer is an assemblage of black and white video with intertitles reminiscent of the Silent Film era, live actors and live music and sounds effects. The live actors’ physical comedy is sure to entertain but in many instances the video and live music and sound effects steal the show.
Though The Boxer pokes fun at the Silent Film genre, it also follows its tradition of social commentary humorously but tenderly illuminating issues of poverty, greed, and gender equity that continue to pervasively affect our society today in the 21st century. Must-see for a heart-felt laugh with a bite of hard-knock reality.
