On Oct. 18, Tampa Bay locals can enjoy a night of singing, dancing and laughs at the SunCoast Cathedral MCC 3rd Annual Variety Show.

Susie Brenner, SunCoast MCC program director, says the church sold 75 tickets the first year, over 100 last year, and are hoping to sell at least 120 this year.

“It’s a community event to bring everyone together to laugh and have a good time,” Brenner says.

Guests will be entertained by emcee/host/performer Joey Panek, numbers from SunCoast MCC members and friends and special guest Rockell Blu.

Panek holds a background as a professional stage actor in New York for 15 years and is currently the director of marketing and communications for American Stage Theater in St. Petersburg. Panek has also guested with Diversity: The Voices of Sarasota and participated in cabaret fundraisers for ALSO Youth. This will be his second year emceeing the SunCoast MCC variety show.

“This crowd is wonderful,” Panek says. “It’s like a family frolic night.”

Robert Rigsby, otherwise known as Rockell Blu, began choreographing and dancing as a teenager. Throughout his career, he has performed nationally at night clubs, pageants, Las Vegas shows, cruise ships and Sesame Street Live. Rigsby can be spotted locally at Georgie’s Alibi, The Flamingo Resort, and Hamburger Mary’s. He is also a dance instructor at the YMCA in St. Petersburg.

Rigsby says he was always known as the “show boy” showgirl in Las Vegas and plans to bring some of his Vegas showgirl side to the review.

“I’m really excited that the church is sponsoring their own variety show,” Rigsby says. “It’s allowing people that would not normally go out to still be entertained and be a part of the community without having to be a part of the nightclub life.”

The show will begin at 7 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres at 6:30 and a beer and wine cash bar. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. Show proceeds go toward the general church fund.
