One of the biggest differences between the new line of Star Wars films and the Lucas-driven originals has been the diversity in the cast of characters and according to Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ director J.J. Abrams, it’s about to get more diverse.
In an interview with The Daily Beast at a pre-Oscars shindig, Abrams confirmed that there will be gay characters in the upcoming Star Wars sequels.
“To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility,” Abrams said. “So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.”
The internet was abuzz in December after The Force Awakens came out in theaters about the very close relationship between ex-Stormtrooper Finn and Rebel pilot Poe, some calling their bromance a secret gay love story introduced right under our noses.
While Abrams did not confirm that the “homosexual character” was either Finn or Poe, we can only hope that this relationship evolves into this generation’s Han and Leia.
Unfortunately, we will have to wait to see what comes of this. The next installment of Star Wars hits theaters December 2017.
