Nickelodeon will introduce the first same-sex parents in one of their animated shows July 19.
The Loud House, a cartoon that centers on an 11-year-old boy named Lincoln and his 10 sisters, started airing on the children’s network this past May and has become a big hit already for the cable channel.
In the episode titled “Two Boys and a Baby,” Lincoln is preparing to have a sleepover with his best friend Clyde. When Clyde shows up he is accompanied by his two dads, Howie and Harold.
The door bell rings and as Lincoln approaches it he looks to the camera and says, “This is it. Time to make history.” Lincoln is of course making reference to his sleepover but on a larger scale is introducing the audience to Clyde’s interracial, married gay dads. “Hi Mr. McBride. Hi Mr. McBride,” Lincoln says before the overprotective dads go over the list of what Clyde can and can’t do.
They are not gay stereotypes or caricatures of LGBT people, they are just concerned (maybe a little over bearing) first-time parents.
The full episode airs this afternoon at 5:00 p.m. on Nickelodeon. Watch a clip from today’s episode below.
