Here’s what’s in the grab bag at the anti-LGBT Values Voter Summit

If you look inside the grab bag given to attendees at the 2017 anti-LGBT Values Voter Summit, you might find various items including a schedule of events, but you’d also find a flyer expressing a view of the impact of gay people on public health way out of line of mainstream health organizations.

The flyer advertises for a book called, “The Health Hazards of Homosexuality,” which stokes fears about negative health impacts of being gay as if it were a public health crisis.

“The sexual revolution and mainstreaming of homosexuality have created a public health crisis,” the flyer says. “But the media give little attention to the danger of ‘gay’ and lesbian sexual practices and the resulting health problems experienced by the gay-lesbian-bisexual population. Worse, the medical authorities deliver mixed messages to those at high risk while failing to protect the broader public.”

The flyer says gay and bisexual men are “most severely affected and driving the recent increase in STDs” and all youths — gay and straight — are “increasingly at risk by imitating dangerous ‘gay’ practices.”

The author of the book MassResistance, an organization that credits itself with fighting the LGBT movement in Massachusetts even before state became the first to legalize same-sex marriage in 2003. No individuals is named as the writer, although the book apparently has forward by Brian Camenker, executive director of MassResistance.

A brief look at the website reveals the book is endorsed by American College of Pediatricians, an organization named to sound mainstream, but actually a socially conservative advocacy group.

Although the LGBT community experiences health disparities not seen at the same level at the population at large, major medical groups — including the American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association — have denied that being gay or transgender itself is a disease and came out against widely discredited “ex-gay” conversion therapy aimed at changing sexual orientation.

The anti-LGBT Family Research Council, designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, distributed the flyer at its annual summit at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.

President Trump spoke at the summit, making him the first sitting U.S. president to deliver remarks at the annual anti-LGBT event.
