2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has joined the lineup at the upcoming national dinner for the Human Rights Campaign, the organization announced Monday.
Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, said in a statement his organization welcomes Clinton at the 21st annual dinner, which will take place Saturday at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
“Hillary Clinton has spent a lifetime fighting for the vulnerable, marginalized, and oppressed — and she’s not about to back down now,” Griffin said. “As we confront powerful political forces built on hate and fear, Hillary — and the majority of American voters who backed her — have continued to champion the values that truly make America great. We are grateful to Hillary Clinton for being our steadfast champion each and every day.”
Clinton is set to make an appearance at the event as she promote her book, “What Happened,” which seeks to explain her loss in the election against then-Republican candidate Donald Trump. Many critics have pounced on Clinton for blaming others for her loss, although she has said she takes responsibility for the results of the 2016 election.
The Human Rights Campaign also announced Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos will appear at the event to receive the HRC National Equality Award. Others set to make an appearance are lesbian athlete Billie Jean King, multi-platinum selling band DNCE and Gold Star father Khizr Khan.
As previously announced, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), who’s quickly becoming a favorite in the LGBT community as a potential 2020 presidential candidate, will also speak at the event. Two-time Emmy Award-winning actress Uzo Aduba of “Orange is the New Black” fame is set to receive the HRC Ally for Equality Award.
