LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) | The family of a Louisiana man who was stabbed over the weekend is calling the assault a hate crime, but police said the evidence doesn’t support that.
Holden White, 18, was stabbed in the neck and wrists and was in critical condition as of June 22, Lafayette police spokesperson Sgt. Wayne Griffin told news outlets.
Authorities arrested Chance Seneca, 19, June 20 and charged him with attempted second-degree murder.
White’s family told news outlets that White met Seneca through the dating app Grindr.
The family said it believes the stabbing was a hate crime targeting White because he is gay and questions authorities’ reasoning for not classifying it as one.
Griffin said the stabbing won’t be classified as a hate crime because nothing in the case has pointed in that direction.
Authorities who responded to a call about 11:45 p.m. on June 20 found White suffering from a large stab wound to his neck, Griffin said. Seneca was at the scene.
Griffin said the pair got into an argument and Seneca stabbed White.
Further details regarding the case weren’t immediately released. It’s unclear whether Seneca had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
