ViacomCBS will donate 100% of proceeds from a new collection of licensed “Star Trek” merchandise to GLAAD, the sci-fi property’s official retailer has announced.
StarTrek.com unveiled its transgender-focused, three-item “Star Trek: Discovery” GLAAD Collection Nov. 5. It follows the introduction of the first non-binary and transgender characters in the franchise’s more than 50-year history.
The characters premiered on the third season of “Star Trek: Discovery” that day, which streams exclusively on CBS All Access in the U.S. The episode introduced Adira, a nonbinary character played by nonbinary performer Blu del Barrio and Gray, a transgender character played by Ian Alexander. The series has been nominated for multiple GLAAD Awards for its LGBTQ-inclusive storylines.
“In continuing the ‘Star Trek’ universe’s ongoing commitment to [creator] Gene Roddenberry’s original vision of celebrating diversity and inclusion, the StarTrek.com shop has launched the ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ GLAAD Collection,” the retailer announced. The items will benefit GLAAD to support its “culture changing work to accelerate acceptance for LGBTQ people.”
“Star Trek” has a long history of inclusion, something Watermark discussed with openly gay franchise veteran George Takei in 2018, and LGBTQ-focused merchandise is not new to StarTrek.com’s online shop. Its GLAAD Collection includes a “Star Trek: Discovery” Delta T-Shirt, Delta Black Mug and Delta Sherpa Blanket. View the items and read more below:
