“DC Pride” and “Marvel Voices: Pride” will return in time for Pride Month 2023, highlighting LGBTQ characters and creators from each comic company.
DC announced “DC Pride 2023” #1 March 13, which will publish May 30 to showcase its “ongoing legacy of LGBTQIA+ characters.” Marvel followed suit March 20, promising “Marvel Voices: Pride” #1 will return “with more impact than ever” on June 14.
Each anthology launched to widespread acclaim in 2021, praise which followed in 2022. Last year’s editions are currently nominated for Outstanding Original Graphic Novel/Anthology in the 34th annual GLAAD Media Awards, which honor fair, accurate and inclusive LGBTQ representation.
“‘DC Pride’ is back again with a brave, bold, and all-new collection of stories starring DC’s stable of fan-favorite LGBTQIA+ characters — many of whom will find themselves in thrilling team-ups the likes of which you’ve never seen before,” DC shared in a press release. Stories will feature LGBTQ characters like Green Lantern, Robin, Superman and other fan favorites.
Ahead of its release, DC will publish “The DC Book of Pride” May 16. The book is billed as “an inspiring illustrated hardcover that profiles more than 50 LGBTQIA+ characters in detail.” “DC Pride: Through the Years” #1 will also reprint classic stories featuring LGBTQ characters throughout the years, out June 13.
“Throughout its line of monthly comic books, DC will highlight Pride-themed variant covers on series that feature queer characters in regular and lead roles,” the company also announced. The comics include “Tim Drake: Robin,” “Nightwing” and “Wonder Woman.”
For its part, Marvel shared its anthology “will continue its tradition of bringing the spirit of Pride Month to your local comic shop with a dazzling and diverse collection of tales, all brought together by an incredible lineup of new and established talent.” LGBTQ characters like Black Cat, Wiccan, Hulkling and more will feature.
“The 2021 and 2022 ‘Marvel Voices: Pride’ introductions of Somnus and Escapade sent shockwaves through the Marvel Universe before appearing in titles like ‘Marauders’ and ‘New Mutants,’” the company added, referencing two recent LGBTQ creations. “You won’t want to miss who’s next!”
Marvel will also launch a new “Loki” series in June, “one of many Marvel Comics titles publishing throughout the year that spotlight LGBTQIA+ heroes.” Those includes “Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain” and “New Mutants: Lethal Legion.” Pride variant covers will return as well.
“Fans from every arc of the rainbow and True Believers everywhere are invited to see the future of Marvel Comics in 2023’s ‘Marvel Voices: Pride’ #1,” the company teased. Read more:
