A Florida State Senator has filed a bill that would ban ex-gay therapy for minors.

Also known as conversion therapy, the bill refers to a range of treatments intended to turn gay people straight. The practice has been condemned by the American Psychiatric Association, and bans already exist in California and New Jersey.

Sen. Jeff Clemens (D-Lake Worth) filed the bill Oct. 7.

“The term ‘sexual orientation change therapy’ means therapy that seeks to change a person’s sexual orientation, including, but not limited to, efforts to change behaviors, gender identity, or gender expressions, or to reduce or eliminate sexual or romantic attractions or feelings toward a person of the same gender,” reads the bill, and it specifies that the therapy would only be illegal for “a person who is under 18 years of age.”

If enacted by the Florida Legislature, the bill would take effect July 1, 2014.
