Carlos Guillermo Smith launches District 49 campaign at The Abbey

Orlando – Carlos Guillermo Smith officially kicked off his 2016 run for Florida House of Representatives’ District 49 at The Abbey July 9.

Smith, who is the current chair for the Orange County Democrats, spoke to the nearly 200 attendees about his path to get to Tallahassee and why he thinks he should represent District 49.

“My name is Carlos Guillermo Smith and I’m a progressive, liberal Democrat running for the Florida House of Representatives,” Smith said. “Tonight is not just the official start of a new journey but the result of years of personal investment that many of you had made in me.”

District 49’s seat is up for grabs with no incumbent running for re-election since the current representative, Rene Plasencia (R-Orlando), announced in April that he would run for the District 50 seat in 2016.

“There is a Republican incumbent who is out of touch with the voters, and has fled to another district, where no one knows who he is because he’s afraid to face me in the general election,” Smith said.

The event was a who’s who of Central Florida politics, attended by Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan, former State Representative Linda Stewart, Congressional candidate Susannah Randolph, Orange County Tax Collector Scott Randolph, State Representative of District 30 Karen Castor Dental to name a few.

Former House 49 State Representative, and close friend to Smith, Joe Saunders spoke to the crowd.

“We need him there. We need someone who will use every breath, and every ounce of political capital to fight for us,” Saunders said.
