Editor’s note: the charges against Spar were later dropped.
The co-publisher of the new weekly OMG! Magazine based in Ybor City was arrested at the end of July on charges related to a botched deposit at a Wachovia Bank in March.
According to the Tampa Police Department, S cott S par was charged with grand theft and fraud on July 30 after he turned himself in. He was released later that day on $4,000 bond.
The report says that on March 9, Spar deposited a $6,000 check written on a SunTrust account for AfterDark Investments LLC into another business account for AfterDark Holdings LLC at Wachovia Bank. The next day, police say Spar withdrew $3,800 in cash and a money order for nearly $300 from the Wachovia account.
He was given the money, but a Wachovia employee reported that the initial $6,000 deposited check was returned because the SunTrust account had been closed three years earlier for being overdrawn. Spar reportedly withdrew an additional $1,700 after the fraudulent deposit, making the total loss to Wachovia nearly $5,800.
The incident is unrelated to OMG! Magazine or any of its employees, according to the Tampa Police Department.
Attempts by Watermark to contact Spar were unsuccessful. He remains free on bond.
