Movie looks at gay Jewish youth

The Temple Sinai has publicly stated it wants to actively reach out to the LGBT community. In a big step in doing so, the temple will screen a film about coming out gay in a Jewish high school. Hineini will be shown on Saturday, Sept. 12.

The film chronicles the struggles of Shulamit Izen, who tries to establish a Gay-Straight Alliance at a Jewish high school in Boston. In addicion to addressing the challenges inherent in creating a GSA for students and teachers, the film tells the story of a community wrestling with the very definition of pluralism and diversity in a Jewish context.

The date of the screening is important because Sept. 12 is Selichot, which precedes the Jewish New Year and begins the High Holy Days. The film will begin at approximately 8:15 p.m. and will be preceded by a 7 p.m. worship service and dessert reception. Rabbi Geoff Huntting will lead a short discussion of the film after the screening and everyone is invited to attend.

Temple Sinai is part of the Reform Judaism in Southwest Florida and strives to celebrate common heritages, individuality and diversity throughout the community.
