St. Pete Pride hires executive director

The state’s largest LGBT Pride has hired a new executive director. St. Petersburg resident Shayna Bruce was selected to head the seven-year-old organization after the board conducted a nationwide search.

“I’m really excited; this is a dream job for me,” Bruce said. “I get to be involved in making changes and I get to use my education.”

non-profit consultant in Tampa Bay.

“I expect to be doing a lot of networking within the community,” Bruce said. “I’ll be responsible for getting sponsors to participate in our annual promenade and I’ll help put a face to Pride as far as contact information goes.”

Bruce said she also expects to take St. Pete Pride into more of an advocacy role. She hopes to partner her organization with the Human Rights Campaign and Equality Florida, for example, to repeal the state’s ban on gay adoption.

“We do a lot of fundraising year round,” Bruce said, “but we also want to branch out into other areas.”
