Kathy Griffin at The Flamingo?
It sounds like The Flamingo Resort in South St. Petersburg could host its first big celebrity in the upcoming year. According to Alexis De La Mer, who emcees the new Sunday T-dances around the resort pool, management has been in contact with the D-List diva to bring her to the gay haven. De La Mer didn’t have specifics related to when the comedienne would perform, but she did say on her Facebook page that if Griffin were to perform at the gay resort the stage would be outdoors. Speculation is that since the pool at the resort is so large, management may cover it to create a stage suitable for the gay-loving diva.
Gypsy Productions back for holiday
After a lackluster response to its last play, the future of Gypsy Productions seemed uncertain. But word from artistic director Trevor Keller is that the alternative, gay-themed theater company could be back for the holidays. Eight Reindeer Monologues could be playing at a theater in the Gulfport area sometime around the first week of December. In what could be bigger news, Keller said that Gypsy is also eying space at the Baywalk shopping center in downtown St. Petersburg. The location would put Gypsy in synch with the city’s plan to revitalize the complex.
Coco Montrese places in Miss Gay America
Local female impersonator Coco Montrese finished as first runner up in the Miss Gay America pageant held in St. Louis last month. According to the performer, who appears at The Flamingo, she was only eight points from taking the crown this year. The finish sets her up to be next in line for the royal title for 2011.
BG’s no longer targets gay clientele
After opening earlier this year as the only gay bar off the Gandy Bridge in St. Petersburg, BG’s closed its doors in October only to reopen as a straight establishment. According to one former patron of the bar, which was decked out in rainbow regalia, the owners were afraid that the LGBT community made other members of the overall community uncomfortable and therefore unwilling to patronize the establishment.
