“You know you’re in love you when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.” – Dr. Seuss

What do you get the person who has everything for Valentine’s Day? How about a healthier planet? I wanted to share two ways to widen the grin on your love’s face and make a difference in the world at the same time. One will cost some cash, the other is free, but both have a minimal carbon footprint and neither will eventually end up in a landfill. Welcome, young lovers, to the magical world of e-cards…

David Suzuki Foundation
I’m engaged to Canadian and early in our relationship he told me about David Suzuki. If you’ve never heard of him, you’ll want to check him out. The charismatic environmentalist is something of a national hero in his country. I’ll let you explore his foundation’s website on your own to learn about the important work he is doing.

With a minimum donation of $25 you can send an e-card through Mr. Suzuki’s foundation. What makes it all the more cool is that the foundation has a generous donor that is going to match your donation! So if you give $50, you’ll actually be donating $100.  Talk about a match made in heaven!

The Hunger Site
The Hunger Site is probably one of the grooviest things ever invented. You can visit it daily and with your simple click you donate 1.1 cups of food to the hungry. Site sponsors donate each time you click. Since starting in 1999, the site has generated funding for 671 million cups of food. You can also visit its sister sites: The Breast Cancer Site, The Literacy Site, The Child Health Site, The Rainforest Site, and The Animal Rescue Site. You can set up a reminder e-mail through the site, so you can make a positive impact in the world on a daily basis without even leaving your desk.

Sending an e-card through The Hunger Site doesn’t cost you a thing, and a meal will be donated when your lover opens it. Each of the sister sites have similar e-cards that make donations that correspond to their charity.
