NOM Bus tour changes cities, rallies are still on in Tampa

Marriage has changed the location for its single Florida stop. The Aug. 8 stop originally slated for somewhere in Tampa has been moved to Orlando—but that doesn’t mean Tampa Bay activists are sitting on the sidelines.

“A coalition of pro-equality community organizations have planned an event as a counterpoint to this attack on gay people called ‘Celebrate Our Families,’” said Nadine Smith, Equality Florida executive director.

The Metropolitan Community Church of Tampa will host Celebrate Our Families on Aug. 8 beginning with an indoor picnic at noon. A press conference will follow at 1 p.m. and then the church will show the Vicki Nantz documentary, In Anita’s Wake, which tells the story of Anita Bryant’s crusade against the LGBT community in the 1970s. The purpose of the event, Smith said, is to counteract NOM’s portrayal of LGBT families as dangerous.

“So far their rallies have provoked over the top hate speech, including a poster with two nooses implying gay people should be murdered rather than married,” Smith said. “Ours is going to be a fantastic family-friendly event.”
