“What we would like to do is change the world – make it a little simpler for people to feed, clothe, and shelter themselves as God intended for them to do.” – Dorothy Day
Let’s start the week off with some great news, okay? Remember my posting about Scottie Saves the World being part of the Red Chair Affair? The online auction has ended and our package of an advertisement and a one-of-a-kind chair finished with $295 and it’s number four in the list of top 10 items! And it’s not over yet, Red Chair Affair attendees with a VIP ticket will be able to place bids on the items at the event itself. I’m looking forward to hearing how much our Grumpy Old Chair brings in for this worthwhile cause.
That’s a nice way to ease into our Monday Ripples – links to things that will hopefully inspire you to do some good, or at the very least help you with clever water cooler conversation.
The DBA Pen is Mightier
DBA
Here’s something that was an “oh crap” moment for me, because it’s something that hasn’t crossed my mind. Most writing pens are plastic and what little we know about plastic indicates it will take 1000 years to biodegrade. Since 1950, well over 1 billion plastic pens have been sold, which adds up to one big problem. Never fear, do-gooders, the folks at the NYC based company DBA have the solution in the form of a biodegradable pen.
Mary Goes Over the Edge
Mary Garges’ Fundraising Page
You know how sometimes you wish your relatives would jump off a building? (Come on, we’re friends here, you can admit it.) Well, one of our relatives is making the wish come true! All kidding aside, Brendan’s cousin Mary Garges is raising money for Special Olympics Tennessee. If she can raise $1000 by September 8, she gets the opportunity to rappel down The Nashville City Center Building. She’s over half way to her goal, so give her a donation, help the Special Olympics and give Mary a once in a lifetime experience!
Going Green is Hot!
greenUPGRADER
This site is a great resource for helping make your mission to become green a little easier. They inform you about products that will lead you toward a greener lifestyle, rating them for their level of eco-friendliness. You can mosey around the site on your own, but I wanted to highlight one particular point of interest: managing editor Matt Embrey is gorgeous. As a faithful reader of SSTW, you know that helping to make the world a better place makes you more attractive – this stud is a perfect example.
Bag the Bag
Heal the Bay
Taking a look around Heal the Bay’s website is inspiring. A grassroots effort to clean up California’s Santa Monica Bay grew into an organization and a movement. The group has made substantial progress by getting the city to comply with the Clean Water Act. Now they are taking part in helping to get AB 1998 passed; this bill would ban plastic bags in the state of California. I wanted to share this tongue-in-cheek video with you because I think it gets right to the heart of the matter in an entertaining way.
