This fall has seen unprecedented media coverage of suicides by LGBT youths and young adults. The epidemic has influenced vigils and memorial services around the country. Now, Metro Wellness and Community Centers takes efforts one step farther.
The organization, with offices in Tampa and St. Petersburg, has begun an outreach program to council LGBT youth who have experienced bullying.
“These youth need to know that they are not alone, and that life can get better,” said Andrew Schmidt, Metro’s Director of Behavioral Health. “Therapy will help support them through this time.”
The program—which is free, has seen a positive response, according to the organization. Schmidt has spoken at several area schools to combat bullying and to let LGBT youth know that help is available.
“Being young is hard enough, but being young and gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered can make life feel unbearable,” Schmidt said.
Appointments are available in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. For more information contact Schmidt at 727-321-3854 or e-mail Andrews@MetroTampaBay.org.
