It appears that President Obama plans to take action on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
According to The Washington Post, Attorney General Eric Holder is about to issue a statement announcing that the administration will no longer defend DOMA lawsuits in court.
The report also says a letter has been sent to Congress informing the legislature that if they want to defend the statute, they may do so.
A currently pending DOMA case has a filing deadline of March 11.
DOMA is a federal law passed in 1996 that defines marriage as a legal union between one man and one woman. It also states that no state needs to recognize a same sex marriage , even if they were legally married in another state that recognizes gay marriage.
