Out and Proudâ┚¬Â¦and Transgender
On March 7, Veterans Affairs released a statement conveying its support for transgender veterans. Though the military does not allow transgender individuals to serve, many veterans come out as transgender after their terms of duty. The directive made clear that transgendered veterans deserve and will continue to receive the same physical and mental health care as other veterans. The statement, posted to the Out and Proud Veterans Facebook page, states all VA staff must provide care to transgender patients â┚¬Å”without discrimination in a manner consistent with care and management of all Veteran patients,â┚¬Â emphasizing equality in treatment. It also reiterates coverage for medically necessary healthcare for transgender veterans, such as sex-specific care like mammograms and pap smears, and transition-related care like hormones and mental health services. However, the VA is still prevented from performing or paying for sex reassignment surgery, in accordance with existing regulation.
Not-so Grand Opening
March 1 marked the grand opening of The Brink, the new LGBT nightclub in downtown Orlando. However, many were perplexed when upon arriving at the 9 o'clock advertised opening time, there were no visible signs the locale was even operational. Patrons noticed that not only were the doors locked, no personnel were around and the sign on the building still showed Hoops Tavern. After more than 45 minutes, the once occupied sidewalk of eagerlies began to dissipate. It was later found out the nightclub opened at 10:30 p.m. The late start clearly didn't faze business. According to many in attendance, the place was packed. One person posted, â┚¬Å”Nice place. Reminds me of when Pulse first opened,â┚¬Â referring to the clubs interior and clientele. The free drinks they were offering all night probably didn't hurt either.
