Openly gay judge nominated to federal court

President Barack Obama has nominated William L. Thomas to a position as federal judge in South Florida. If confirmed, Thomas would be the first out gay black man appointed to a federal judgeship.

He would fill the opening left by U.S. District Judge Adalberto Jordan, who was confirmed as a federal appeals court judge earlier this year.

According to a bio released by the White House, Thomas has served as a Circuit Judge in Florida’s Eleventh Judicial Circuit since 2005, where he has presided over both civil and criminal matters.  He’s also worked as a public defender in South Florida, where he began his legal career in 1994.
