Judge panel clears the way for marriage equality in Brazil

Looks like marriage equality is going to be national law in Brazil.

A top judicial panel ruled May 14 that same-sex couples cannot be denied marriage licenses.

The National Council of Justice oversees the Brazilian judicial system and is headed by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Joaquim Barbosa.

On the Council’s website, Justice Barbosa said the court “”affirmed that the expression of homosexuality and homosexual affection cannot serve as a basis for discriminatory treatment, which has no support in the Constitution.”

In the meantime, Brazilian lawmakers are considering a bill that would legalize marriage equality.
