Atlantic Beach – Atlantic Beach is one step closer to finalizing a Human Rights Ordinance.
The City Commission passed –on the first of two required readings— the HRO with a 3-2 vote. The proposed ordinance would ban discrimination against people based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation and gender identity or gender expression within the city limits.
Before the City Commission voted at the July 15 meeting on the agenda item, the floor was opened for speakers. Thirty-nine people spoke in favor, four in opposition and two took neutral stances on the HRO, according to City Clerk ‘s Office.
The HRO was originally introduced by Commissioner Maria Mark. At a meeting last November, the City Commission discussed and wrote up preliminary language for a future policy. The HRO now will have its second reading and final vote at the Aug. 11 City Commission meeting, where passed, the HRO will be officially adopted.
Commissioners Jimmy Hill and Jonathan Daughtery voted in opposition for the HRO at the July 14 meeting, both agreeing that the HRO will just make Atlantic Beach businesses the targets of lawsuits. The HRO states there will be an exemption for religious organizations or smaller business, although both commissioners also find this measure unnecessary.
