Broward County – The Broward County Commission unanimously passed a motion to support same-sex marriage. The resolution comes only a week after Broward County Circuit Court Judge Dale Cohen ruled the state’s ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional.
The commission’s Aug. 12 decision was intended to send a message to Attorney General Pam Bondi that her filed appeals in two different marriage equality lawsuits is a waste of taxpayer money fighting the wrong side on an issue that was ruled unconstitutional by four different judges.
Along with the resolution, the commissioners requested the county attorney to explore ways to withhold funding to Tallahassee that is being used in the appeals process, thus not allowing for more of taxpayer’s money to go toward Bondi’s fight against marriage equality.
“I believe it’s fair to the people of our state, it’s fair to the people of our county, and it’s fair to the plaintiffs in these lawsuits that just want to have the same type of happiness in their lives that my wife and I have in ours,” said Broward County Commissioner David Kiar, who sponsored the resolution, to WSVN 7 News.
There are currently four judges in four different counties — Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach — who ruled the ban unconstitutional, yet no marriage licenses can be issued yet because of Bondi’s pending appeals.
