WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden will hail the recent Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage nationwide in an appearance in New York.
The pro-gay marriage group Freedom to Marry says Biden will speak at a celebration the group is holding July 9 on Wall Street. The group says the event will “celebrate success in winning marriage nationwide and the triumph it represents for America.”
Biden has emerged as a prominent advocate for LGBT rights since announcing his support for gay marriage in the run-up to the 2012 presidential election. Biden’s surprise declaration spurred President Barack Obama to announce his own support.
Biden has made a number of public appearances since his son, Beau Biden, died of brain cancer in May. He attended the Women’s World Cup over the weekend in Canada.
