The Brevard County School Board is moving toward adding sexual orientation and gender identity to the District’s existing non-discrimination policy.
Space Coast activists arrived at the Dec. 8 school board meeting wearing red, hoping to rally support for the expanded protections by testifying during the meeting’s public comments session.
“Two Board members addressed us after the public comments, stating that they are ready to move forward with making the change to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the non-discrimination policies for students and employees,” says Lexi Wright, president of Space Coast Pride. “There is a meeting next week where the Board will unveil their plans for 2016 and they said this change is on the list.”
The Brevard County School Board’s strategic planning meeting is Dec. 15.
It appears this is part of a larger movement in Space Coast to get LGBT protections added to all area anti-discrimination policies. Space Coast Pride hosted an ambassador training on Dec. 4 to educate activists on how to effectively tell their stories to lawmakers in order to push for LGBT-inclusive Human Rights Ordinances.
