On Jan. 12, 2016, U.S. President Barack Obama delivered his final State of the Union address. He touched on issues of concern to the gay community twice.
Within the context of discussing American leadership on a global scale, President Obama talked about ending HIV/AIDS.
“Right now, we are on track to end the scourge of HIV/AIDS, and we have the capacity to accomplish the same thing with malaria – something I’ll be pushing this Congress to fund this year,” he said.
Toward the end of the speech, the President used a closeted gay man as an example of the quality and grit of American citizens.
“It’s the son who finds the courage to come out as who he is, and the father whose love for that son overrides everything he’s been taught,” he said, shortly before closing out his speech.
