Cynthia Nixon comes up short in campaign against Andrew Cuomo

Queer progressive activist and “Sex and the City” star Cynthia Nixon came up short in her insurrection campaign against New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the state’s primary on September 11.

With 86 percent of precincts reporting, Cuomo claimed 65 percent of the vote compared to the 35 percent won by Nixon. The Associated Press called the race for Cuomo at 9:30 pm.

Another LGBT candidate who came up short was Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.), who was running for the Democratic nomination to become New York attorney general. Had he succeeded, he would have been in a position to be the first openly gay person in that position.

New York City public advocate Letitia James ended up winning that race with a plurality of 41 percent of the vote. Progressive activist Zephyr Teachout came in second with 31 percent of the vote and Maloney came in third place with 25 percent.

Maloney, a three-term member of Congress, had already won the nomination to run again in New York’s 18th congressional district, so will remain on the ballot in that capacity in November.
