The Emmy-winning Netflix series “Queer Eye” is set to explore the relationship between religious faith and LGBTQ+ identity with the return of its fifth season on June 5.
The upcoming season finds the Fab Five heading to the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as the base for their hero makeovers.
In the new season’s trailer, which was released by Netflix May 21, one of the heroes shown is a gay priest. He vocalizes his difficulty in reconciling his sexual orientation and religious leadership.
“I feel like I can’t be the kind of leader in the church that I could be,” he says.
The Fab Five help him begin the process of overcoming these emotional concerns by connecting him with other LGBTQ-inclusive religious leaders. In a conversation about his coming out experience, seen in the trailer below, a fellow clergyperson helps him examine his journey in a new light.
“Queer Eye” originally premiered on Netflix in February 2018 and has won seven Emmy awards in its two-year run, two of which include consecutive wins for Outstanding Structured Reality Program. Its fifth season will be available to stream on Netflix starting June 5.
