HBO Max has ordered a series based on DC Comics’ Green Lantern, according to Variety, and it looks like we will get to see an openly gay Lantern featured.
The series, which was announced to be in development October 2019, will feature adventures from several members of the Green Lantern Corps including Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz and Alan Scott, who is the first openly gay Lantern and was the very first Lantern in DC Comics.
Scott first appeared in “All-American Comics” #16 in 1940. At the time he was not an openly gay character. That came in 2012 when the character was reimagined and introduced as an openly gay man.
Variety says the “Green Lantern” series will also include fan favorites such as Sinestro and Kilowog, as well as introduce new heroes to the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps.
The series order is for 10 one-hour episodes and will be co-written and executive produced by Seth Grahame-Smith and Marc Guggenheim. Greg Berlanti’s production company, Berlanti Productions will produce the show for Warner Bros. Television.
Berlanti has written, directed and produced some of the most talked about shows on TV including “Dawson’s Creek,” “You,” “Riverdale,” “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” and more. Berlanti is also behind many other shows based on DC superheroes, including each of the series in The CW’s “Arrowverse”; the DC Universe’s “Titans” and “Doom Patrol”; and a series adaptation of “Strange Adventures,” a series of comic books published by DC Comics that will — like “Green Lantern” — be developed for HBO Max.
Berlanti, who is openly gay, was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2020.
