IKEA Canada celebrates the LGBTQ community with 10 ‘Love Seats’ inspired by Pride flags

As Pride month 2021 comes to an end, IKEA Canada is celebrating with “Love Seats,” a series of “one-of-a-kind slipcovers inspired by the colors of different Pride flags, and the lived experiences from a wide spectrum of gender and sexual identities they represent,” according to a press release from the company.

IKEA Canada collaborated with designers from the LGBTQ community to come up with the designs. The slipcovers were handcrafted by four designers who “honor the richness and diversity of the 2SLGBTQ+ community while igniting a national conversation about identity and representation.”

Bianca Daniela Nachtman designed three love seats based on the transgender flag, the Two-Spirit flag and the pansexual flag; Madison Van Rijn designed two love seats based on the lesbian flag and the transgender flag; Charlotte Carbone designed three love seats based on the nonbinary flag, the genderfluid flag and the bisexual flag; and Ali Haider designed two love seats based on the progress pride flag and the asexual flag.

“Each Love Seat was designed in collaboration with a community member and inspired by the colors and personal meaning of the corresponding flag. Each designer had the freedom to create a one-of-a-kind piece of art,” said Claudia Mayne, Director, Marketing Communications at IKEA Canada, in the release. “This partnership is our way of helping artists in different communities express themselves on a large platform in a way that’s been tricky during COVID-19.”

The “Love Seats” campaign also features members of the LGBTQ community sharing their stories of “self-love, romantic love, family love, chosen love or community love,” the release says.

The Love Seats will be on display at select IKEA locations across Canada throughout the summer. Check out each Love Seat, information on each of the srtists and watch LGBTQ members share their stories at IKEA.com.
