The bodies of a married lesbian couple who had been missing were discovered near a camping area in Grand County, Utah Aug. 18. Kylen Carrol Schulte, 24, and Crystal Michelle Turner, 38, also known as Crystal Beck, had been shot to death.
The Grand County Sheriff’s Office released a statement that its detectives are conducting a double-homicide investigation and that the couple’s bodies were taken to the Utah state medical examiner’s office in Taylorsville, Utah, to determine the causes of death.
“We are currently following up with any and all leads that come to our attention during this investigation and will continue to be available to people to come forward with information,” the sheriff’s office stated.
A spokesman for the sheriff’s office told NBC News affiliate KSL-TV 5 in Salt Lake City that investigators do not believe the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide, and that both women were killed by a third person.
No information about the alleged gunman was initially released , though in its statement, the sheriff’s office said it believes there is “no current danger to the public.” The spokesman said based on the evidence collected in the case, detectives believe the shootings were an “isolated incident.”
Facebook posts on the women’s pages were filled with tributes and memories and the family of Schulte set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for funeral expenses.
