ORLANDO | onePULSE Foundation announced Nov. 1 that the application process for its fourth year of Legacy Scholarships will open Dec. 1 and run through Jan. 31.
The 49 Legacy Scholarships program first launched in 2019, providing a total of 49 scholarships — each up to $10,000 — based on the respective victims’ interests, careers or aspirations to be used at an accredited institution of higher learning, including career and technical schools.
“As an extension of their impact on our world, the scholarships inspire and empower students who share similar dreams, ambitions, and goals,” onePULSE stated in a press release.
Since its start, onePULSE’s program has awarded more than $900,000 in scholarships to students from all over the U.S. The first year’s class was awarded $333,000 in scholarships, the second class $236,300 and the third class $348,000.
onePULSE worked with the families of each of those who were killed in the Pulse tragedy to establish the scholarships based on the respective victims’ interests, careers or aspirations. The 49 scholarships cover a wide range of careers including healthcare, business, cosmetology, social science, communications and the arts. Several of the scholarships are open to any field of study.
Preference will be given to applicants who are immediate family members of the 49 victims, as well as all of the survivors of the tragedy and first responders. Family members, survivors and first responders are strongly encouraged to apply.
A scholarship committee comprised of community members scores three phases of the review process using a rubric scoring tool and make final recipient selections. Applicants meeting the minimum scores at each phase are forwarded to the next phase and their names are not known to the committee until the final interview stage.
