Tapping into relationship superpowers
Quirky and oh-so-talented journalist Liz Langley has scores of holdover LGBT fans from her days as a beloved featured columnist at the Orlando Weekly. Many check in with her on her very fun blog. We ran into her recently doing research (that’s what we said, too) at Fairvilla Megastore. Always inventive, Langley’s Valentine’s Day feature for Details was entitled “Five Rules from the Polyamorous for Not Screwing Up Valentine’s Day.” Among the gems proffered: “Plan ahead or you’ll end up without getting any,” and “Gifts lacking a personal touch will feel the same as a credit card—flat and cold.”
A frigid Valentine’s Day weekend
It’s not good when ‘frigid’ and ‘Valentine’s Day Weekend’ are used in the same sentence, but that was the reason for postponing the much-anticipated Broadway Under the Stars Act II free concert on Saturday, Feb. 13. With the forecast calling for temperatures in the 40s and high winds, organizer Sam Singhaus and Orange County Commissioner Linda Stewart agreed to postpone the outdoor event at Cypress Grove Park. Singhaus says that it will be rescheduled for some time within the next 3 to 4 weeks. Watch for announcements.
Tantalizing tix
For LGBT culture whores, there are two intimate upcoming events of note. First, outspoken Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Marsha Norman (‘night Mother, Getting Out, and the books for The Secret Garden and The Color Purple) will be at the Annie Russell Theater at Rollins College on March 26. At 10 a.m. she’ll talk about writing for the theater, and at 7 p.m. she’ll join a panel featuring award-winning editorial cartoonist Jules Feiffer to discuss the arts and social responsibility. The following month, actor Philip Seymour Hoffman will be the big-deal celebrity guest at the upcoming PlayFest at the Orlando Shakespeare Theater. Hoffman won a Best Actor Oscar playing gay in Capote. He’ll discuss his estimable career in an Inside the Actor’s Studio-type event on Saturday, April 10. Limited tickets go on sale March 10.
