Overheard Tampa Bay: Banana hammocks on the run

Overheard Tampa Bay: Banana hammocks on the run

Full Speedo Ahead
If you haven’t seen Jay Aller’s vehicle recently, it’s time to swing by the parking lot of the ASAP offices in Clearwater to catch a glimpse. The AIDS Service Association’s Resource Development Manager has been promoting the 3rd Annual Speedo Run for months. So it just made sense to convert his Scion into a SpeedoMobile! The entire vehicle is “wrapped” in Santa Speedo Run swag, complete with logos, the website and familiar sponsors – of which Watermark is proud to be among. Aller’s vehicle has been spotted throughout Tampa Bay and photographed by onlookers in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. Recently it stopped at the Starbucks on South Howard and at several businesses in Ybor City.

The goal in 2012 is to raise $50,000 for ASAP and its charity specifically geared toward children. The Dec. 9 run will begin – and end – at Centennial Park. Registration is at 1 p.m. with the run scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Speedos aren’t required but are surely encouraged for participants. As with previous runs, expect to see some highly elaborate holiday decor clinging to mostly-naked bodies and plenty of smiles from those watching from the sidewalk. Registration is still open at SantaSpeedoRun.org. Participants will receive a holiday ornament and an official 2012 Santa Speedo Run T-shirt.

It’s the holidays, sisters
What would the holidays be without the Tampa Bay Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence spreading the inappropriateness? They would be boring, that’s what!

Fortunately for us, the sisters are back with their Holiday Ham It Up fundraiser benefitting Metro Wellness and Community Centers, Francis House and ASAP on Friday, Dec. 14. The shenanigans will feature hostesses Sister Monica Muffdiver and Meagan Towers at The Broken Tusk (4685 28th St. N. in St. Petersburg) beginning at 9 p.m. The sisters will collect food, toys and monetary donations throughout the evening and will hold a raffle for a new iPad. Special entertainment scheduled to appear include Mr. and Miss St. Pete Pride Vinnie Marconi and Jasmine Skiis and Isis Renatus, Ambrosia Chanel, Kori Stevens. Waiting to ‘quench’ that thirst
It looks like that plans to open the new LGBT club Quench in Largo have been slightly delayed. But don’t worry,  the plan is still to have the new nightclub open by mid-January in the same strip mall that once housed Christopher Street Bar on Ulmerton Road at 66th Street.

According to the club’s official Facebook page, the staff is trying to have the bar up and running by New Year’s Eve, but even the most optimistic people have to face reality. “In reality, it will probably be the first or second week in January,” the announcement reads. Since the location of the new club was unveiled in September, the Facebook page has showcased pictures of demolition and construction. The bar is expected to have a dance floor, a large bar and be quite large. It is reported that it will take up four units of the strip mall. For details, find Quench Lounge on Facebook.
