Statewide Domestic Partner Registry dead in the water

When Florida’s legislative session ended May 3, so did LGBT activists’ hopes for a statewide domestic partner registry.

The “Family First Bill,” which was filed by Sen. Eleanor Sobel (D-Hollywood) in January, cleared the Florida Senate Committee on Children, Families and Elder Affairs by a 5 to 4 vote on April 1. It later died in the Judiciary Committee.

State lawmakers also did not move on the Competitive Workforce Act, which would have updated Florida’s Civil Rights Act of 1992 to include workplace protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. That bill has been filed for several years running without making it out of committee.
