Singer Demi Lovato revealed in a series of tweets May 19 that they now identify as nonbinary and are officially changing their pronouns to they/them.

“Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all – I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward,” the musician tweeted.

The two-time Grammy nominee said that their decision comes “after a lot of healing and self-reflective work.”

Lovato’s announcement also came with the first episode of their new podcast called “4D With Demi Lovato.” In the first episode, they talked with Alok Vaid-Menon about gender expression and discovering their “true self.”

“This has come after a lot of healing & self-reflective work. I’m still learning & coming into myself, & I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me,” Lovato stated.

The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer announced a few weeks ago a surprising new role in which they will star in “Unidentified with Demi Lovato” on Peacock. The show follows Lovato, their sister and their best friend as they “uncover the truth about the UFO phenomena.”

The former Disney Channel star recently shared their struggles with addiction and mental health in a YouTube documentary that discussed her near-fatal overdose in 2018.

Lovato broke off their engagement to Max Ehrich this past March explaining that they were too “queer” to be with a cis man. Now, they are telling their story and journey of self-discovery.

“I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths & know I am sending so much love your way.”
