WWE Star announces he’s gay at baggage claim as pro boxer proposes to his partner on Facebook

Los Angeles – Professional wrestler Darren Young didn’t hesitate when asked, while waiting at LAX baggage claim, if he thought a gay wrestler could succeed in the WWE.

“Absolutely. Look at me. I’m a WWE superstar and to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now, I’m gay,” Young said. “And I’m happy. I’m very happy.”

Young went on Wednesday to discuss the reaction he may face now that he has announced his orientation.

“Some people might not like it, some people will like it but I’m here to be happy,” he said. “It’s very important I’m happy with myself.”

The WWE star said his sexual orientation had nothing to do with his profession, his relationship with fans and coworkers, or his public perception. Why treat a gay wrestler differently than a straight wrestler?

“All sports are physical. We’re all adults,” Young said. “To be honest with you, when I come to work, I come to work. This is business. I’m a WWE Superstar. I’m there to entertain the WWE Universe and that’s what my job is to do and I do it well.”

Incidentally, Puerto Rican professional boxer Orlando Cruz became engaged via Facebook to his longtime partner on Wednesday.

Cruz, who announced he was gay in October, became the first pro boxer to come out while still competing. Cruz is a featherweight fighter and is 20-2-1 with 10 knockouts. The timing and location of the wedding was unknown. Same-sex marriage is not allowed in Puerto Rico, or in Florida, where Cruz has a home.
