MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama attorney general is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to allow the state to continue to block same-sex marriages until the high court issues a ruling on gay marriage later this year.
Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange on Feb. 3 asked the Supreme Court to keep a hold on a district judge’s decision overturning the state’s ban on gay marriage. The filing came after the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals refused to issue a stay.
Strange said the Supreme Court’s ruling later this year would likely resolve the issue nationwide.
Gay couples will be able to marry in Alabama on Monday unless the high court intervenes. U.S. District Judge Callie Granade’s hold on her order expires Feb. 9. Granade on Tuesday refused a request to lift the stay immediately.
