A truly straight woman might be a mythical creature, like a unicorn or the Loch Ness monster.
A study released Nov. 5 by the University of Essex finds that while lesbians were predominantly more attracted to the female form, most of the women who identified as straight were aroused by both naked men and naked women.
The study, which was led by Dr. Gerulf Rieger from the Department of Psychology, looked at the response to sexual stimuli in 345 women.
“Even though the majority of women identify as straight, our research clearly demonstrates that when it comes to what turns them on, they are either bisexual or gay, but never straight,” Dr. Rieger said.
The study also found that regardless of how masculine women appeared in public, it had no basis on their sexual identity.
“Although some lesbians were more masculine in their sexual arousal, and others were more masculine in their behaviors, there was no indication that these were the same women,” Rieger said.
The results were published in the “Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.”
