Space Coast LGBT activists are trying to get some momentum for a proposal to add LGBT protections to Brevard County Schools’ non-discrimination policy.
“Brevard County Schools have lengthy non-discrimination policies for students and staff, but ‘sexual orientation and gender identity’ is never mentioned,” reads a post to Space Coast Pride’s Facebook page, asking supporters to attend tonight’s Brevard County School Board meeting wearing red.
Clayton Richardson, Space Coast Pride’s secretary, says they plan to speak during the public comments section of the meeting with the goal of getting the issue placed onto the board’s agenda.
“We encourage people to sign up early at the meeting,” Richardson says, “Others are just for support and show numbers behind this issue.”
The meeting is 5:30 p.m. at the District’s Educational Services Facility, 2700 Fran Jamieson Way in Melbourne. Supporters are asked to arrive at 4:30.
It appears this is part of a larger movement in Space Coast to get LGBT protections added to all area anti-discrmination policies. Space Coast Pride hosted an ambassador training on Dec. 4 to educate activists on how to effectively tell their stories to lawmakers in order to push for LGBT-inclusive Human Rights Ordinances.
