Hospital apologizes to lesbian widow

Nurses at a Miami hospital said “I’m sorry” to a lesbian they barred from seeing her partner as she was dying in 2007. Lisa Pond suffered a fatal brain aneurysm while she, Janice Langbehn and their two children were in Miami for a cruise. A federal court in Miami recently dismissed Langbehn’s lawsuit against the hospital. The judge said the hospital staff behaved poorly but did not break any laws.

According to the Miami Herald, Martha Baker, a registered nurse and president of SEIU local 1991, the union representing about 5,000 doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals at Jackson officially tendered the apology to Langbehn.

Langbehn welcomed the gesture but said she still wants an apology from the hospital.
